OCT of the macula: an in-depth look at the central retina
L'Macular OCT (optical coherence tomography of the macula) is a non-invasive ophthalmological imaging test that enables detailed visualization of the different layers of the macula, the central area of the retina responsible for fine and central vision. This tool has become essential for diagnosing and monitoring many retinal pathologies.
What is the macula and why examine it?
Visit macula is a small area in the center of the retina that enables us to read, recognize faces and perceive details. Any damage to this area can lead to significant loss of central vision. OCT can detect microscopic changes in this structure long before they become visible in a routine examination.
Examination principle
Macular OCT uses a near-infrared beam of light. It measures the reflection of light on the different layers of the retina, and reconstructs an image of the retina. thin-section image of the macula, similar to a CT scan. The examination is completely painless, with no contact with the eye, and lasts just a few minutes.
What are the indications for macular OCT?
OCT is used to diagnose and monitor numerous pathologies of the macula, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), macular edema (associated with diabetes, venous occlusion or post-operative conditions), epiretinal membranes, macular holes, as well as certain forms of retinal inflammation or hereditary dystrophies.
Examination procedure
The patient sits comfortably in front of the OCT unit, rests his or her chin on a support, and stares at a spot of light. The device then captures images in a matter of seconds. Pupil dilation is not always necessary, except in certain specific cases. The images obtained are immediately interpretable by the ophthalmologist.
An indispensable monitoring tool
One of the great advantages of OCT is its ability to track the evolution of a disease over time objectively. It can be used to assess response to treatment, in particular to intraocular injections in AMD or diabetes, and tailor treatment decisions to the actual state of the retina.
