Laser vision correction: alternatives and customized solutions
Today, laser refractive surgery represents an effective solution for correcting vision disorders such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and sometimes presbyopia. It reduces or eliminates dependence on glasses or contact lenses, by reshaping the cornea so that light rays focus correctly on the retina.
Several techniques are available, the most common being LASIKthe PKR (or PRK), and the SMILE. The choice of method depends on the patient's ocular morphology, corneal thickness, type of visual defect, and individual expectations. These procedures are fast, painless and performed on an outpatient basis, and offer rapid visual recovery in the majority of cases.
Phakic implants for vision correction
Visit phakes implants are intraocular lenses inserted into the eye without removing the natural crystalline lens. They are an alternative for people not eligible for laser surgery, particularly in cases of high myopia or corneal anomalies.
There are two main types: implants pre-crystalline (placed between the iris and the crystalline lens) and implants anterior chamber (placed in front of the iris). These transparent lenses correct the eye's refraction in the same way as a contact lens, but permanently, while preserving the eye's natural accommodation.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, under local anaesthetic. It is reversible, a major advantage. The implant can be removed or replaced if necessary. Results are generally very satisfactory, with rapid improvement in vision and excellent tolerance.
Phake implants are therefore a a safe and efficient option for young patients with thin corneas or high correction levels, who wish to do away with glasses without resorting to laser treatment.
