Ocular biometry: measuring the eye to see better

What is biometrics?
Biometry uses specialized equipment to analyze the anatomical dimensions of the eye. Key measurements include the axial length of the eye, i.e. the distance between the cornea and the retina, and the curvature of the cornea, known as keratometry. The examination also assesses the depth of the anterior chamber and, in some cases, the thickness of the crystalline lens. These various data are then integrated into sophisticated calculation formulas to determine the most suitable intraocular implant for each patient.

How does the exam work?
The examination is fast, painless and non-invasive. The patient places his or her chin on a support, fixes a point of light, and the device takes measurements in a matter of seconds. With optical biometry, no direct contact with the eye is required, limiting the risk of discomfort or infection.
Why is biometrics essential?
The accuracy of biometrics determines quality of vision after surgery. An error in calculation can lead to under- or over-correction, hence the importance of a rigorous examination. Thanks to new technologies, modern biometry now makes it possible to obtain visual results very close to natural vision, and even to correct certain refractive errors at the same time as cataracts.
