Explorations: precision examinations to better understand the eye
Modern ophthalmology relies on advanced exploratory examinations to refine diagnoses, personalize treatments and ensure optimal follow-up. These explorations enable highly precise analysis of the various structures of the eye, from the anterior segment (cornea, crystalline lens) to the posterior segment (retina, macula). Here's an overview of the main examinations carried out in our offices and specialized centers:
Retinal angiography
This test involves injecting a fluorescent dye into a vein in the arm, followed by a series of photographs of the back of the eye. It enables us to study retinal and choroidal blood circulation. There are two techniques: fluorescein angiography (for the retina) and indocyanine green angiography (for the choroid). It is useful for diagnosing pathologies such as AMD, diabetic retinopathy and vascular occlusions.
Corneal topography
Corneal topography maps the curvature and regularity of the corneal surface. It is essential for screening for keratoconus, planning refractive surgery (such as LASIK), or fitting contact lenses. The examination is fast, non-invasive and provides a relief map of the cornea.
Specular microscopy
This examination visualizes the cells of the corneal endothelium, the inner layer of the cornea responsible for its transparency. It is particularly indicated prior to intraocular surgery (cataract, implants, transplants), in cases of suspected corneal dystrophy, or in long-term contact lens wearers. It helps assess the health and density of endothelial cells, which play an essential role in maintaining corneal clarity. Alteration of these cells can lead to corneal edema and reduced vision, hence the importance of early detection and regular follow-up in at-risk cases.
Biometrics
Biometry measures the anatomical dimensions of the eye, such as axial length, corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth and sometimes lens thickness. These data are indispensable for calculating the power of the intraocular implant prior to cataract surgery or in certain cases of refractive surgery.
OCT Cornea & OCT Macula
OCT (optical coherence tomography) is a non-invasive imaging technique that provides very thin slices of the eye's various structures. When applied to the corneaThis is particularly useful for keratoconus screening, preoperative assessment in refractive surgery and post-graft follow-up. With regard to maculaAs the central zone of the retina responsible for fine vision, OCT can be used to diagnose and monitor pathologies such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), macular edema and epiretinal membranes.
Aberrometry
Aberrometry measures the optical aberrations of the eye, including complex visual defects not detected by conventional correction. It is often used prior to refractive surgery or in patients with unexplained vision loss. It allows us to personalize treatments by providing a true "optical map" of the eye.
